What the Research Shows

5,300 Years of Cacao

The oldest known evidence of people using cacao comes from Santa Ana-La Florida, in the upper Amazon of southeast Ecuador, and dates to about 5,300 years ago. Researchers found it three separate ways: cacao starch grains, theobromine residues and ancient DNA.

Zarrillo et al., Nature Ecology & Evolution, 2018

Native to the Upper Amazon

Cacao trees show their greatest genetic diversity in the upper Amazon, the likely home of the species. A study that genotyped more than 1,200 cacao samples sorted them into ten genetic groups, Criollo among them.

Motamayor et al., PLoS ONE, 2008

Named the Food of the Gods

Carl Linnaeus gave the cacao tree its scientific name, Theobroma cacao. Theobroma is Greek for “food of the gods”, and early Spanish accounts describe the Maya and Aztec belief that cacao was a gift from the gods.

  • Decide for yourself

Cacao naturally contains magnesium (USDA) and anandamide (di Tomaso et al., 1996). How a cup feels is personal: try it, feel it and decide for yourself.

  • Calm, focused energy

Theobromine offers a steady lift - a half-life of roughly 7–12 hours, compared to caffeine's 2–5. Smooth, sustained energy without the jitters and crash.

  • Time to be present

A few minutes a day to slow down, breathe, and return to yourself. Reconnect to small moments that matter. Reconnect to Quiet.

  • Theobromine

Cacao's gentler alternative to caffeine. A longer-acting stimulant - half-life of roughly 7–12 hours - that produces calm, sustained energy.

  • Magnesium

Naturally occurring in whole-bean cacao. Supports a relaxed nervous system and softens physical tension.

  • Anandamide

A natural compound in cacao, first reported in chocolate in 1996 (di Tomaso et al., 1996).

  • Flavanols

Plant antioxidants traditionally associated with long-term heart and brain wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is pure, minimally processed cacao prepared according to traditional methods. It keeps its natural fat, along with compounds such as theobromine (USDA) and anandamide (di Tomaso et al., 1996). It's plant medicine with real cultural roots, meant to be prepared slowly and shared with intention.

How is Chaka different from cacao powder or hot chocolate?

Cacao powder has its cacao butter pressed out and is usually high-heat processed; hot chocolate is sweetened cacao powder. Chaka is whole-bean and stone-ground, so the natural fats and active compounds are preserved.

How is Chaka sourced?

Single origin and stone-ground. Our Peruvian cacao is Criollo, grown by smallholder family farms in Satipo, Peru, and comes as discs. Our Colombian cacao is grown by Indigenous Arhuaco communities in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and comes as squares. Read more in our sourcing story.

What does it actually feel like?

Most people describe a steady, calm energy with a warm, heart-opening mood. It's quite distinct from your typical coffee jolt. Benefits build over time.

How do I store it?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It does not require refrigeration.

What is the caffeine content?

Cacao contains only trace amounts of caffeine but is rich in theobromine, which provides calm, sustained energy.

Can I add milk or sweetener?

Yes - many people enjoy it with warmed milk, cinnamon, honey, vanilla, or a pinch of sea salt or nutmeg. Start simple and adjust to taste.

How often can I drink cacao?

Most people drink it 3 - 5 times per week. Start slowly and listen to your body.

What if I don't love it?

Drink it for 30 days. If it isn't the morning you wanted, email support@chakacacao.co and we'll refund you in full or exchange it, your choice. There's no need to send the bag back.
